This tour takes you through the highlights of Diocletian’s Palace, one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world, as well as the Split Synagogue and the historic Jewish Quarter.
Your journey begins with a visit to the Palace Cellars, an impressive and well-preserved underground complex that showcases the grandeur of Emperor Diocletian’s 4th-century residence. These vast stone chambers provide a glimpse into the architectural ingenuity of the Roman Empire.
Next, you'll step into the heart of the palace at the Peristyle, the grand central courtyard framed by towering columns, where emperors were once worshipped. From here, we continue through the palace streets, passing by important landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Domnius (formerly Diocletian’s Mausoleum) and the Temple of Jupiter, now converted into a baptistery.
Leaving the palace, we stop at the former Fruit Market (Voćni trg), once a bustling marketplace and today a charming square surrounded by historic buildings. A short walk away is Pjaca (People’s Square), the former center of Venetian administration in Split. Here, you’ll see elegant Venetian and Austrian-era buildings that reflect the city’s transformation over centuries.
We then enter the Jewish Quarter, a historic neighborhood where Split’s Jewish community lived for centuries. Here, you'll visit the Split Synagogue, one of the oldest continuously used synagogues in Europe, built in the 16th century within the palace walls. Depending on availability, you may also have the chance to meet members of the local Jewish community and learn more about their history and traditions.
The tour concludes at the majestic Golden Gate, the northern entrance to Diocletian’s Palace, once reserved for emperors and their closest allies. Standing before this impressive structure, you'll take in the final reflections on Split’s layered history, from Roman times to the present day.
